As the Wisconsin women’s hockey team closes in on the WCHA title, it is wasting no time jumping on opponents.
Saturday, Feb 14, the Badgers scored three times during the first period to set the tone for a 5-1 victory over Minnesota State at the Mayo Clinic Events Center in Mankato, Minn.

The victory allowed the Badgers (27-3-2, 21-3-2 WCHA) to maintain a two-point lead over Ohio State with one series left. UW host St. Cloud State on Feb. 21-22. Ohio State (28-4, 22-4) wraps up the season at Bemidji State on Feb. 20-21.
A different Badger scored each goal Saturday, but the most important ones came from fifth-year senior Lacey Eden, who got the first goal in the 9th minute, and junior Cassie Hall, who recorded the game winner about 3 ½ minutes later.
The performance marked the fourth time in six games the Badgers scored four goals or more since they lost their top players to the Olympics.
The victory also marked the fourth time in six games freshman goalie Rhyah Stewart allowed no more than one goal. Saturday, she turned away 23 shots, and for the weekend, she sent back 42 of 44 shots.
Sophomore forward Finley McCarthy and senior Marianne Picard also had a good weekend.
Finley finished with one goal and two assists Saturday to complete the weekend with five points. Picard, who had the game-winner Friday, added another two-point game (one goal, one assist).
