York cops look for man after assault on person at Vaughan synagogue

The York Regional Police Hate Crime Unit is seeking the public’s help in identifying a male suspect following an assault at a Vaughan synagogue.

On Saturday at approximately 9:35 a.m., officers attended a synagogue in the area of Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue after an unknown male attempted to enter, and when denied, attempted to force his way inside.

It is reported that the suspect threw a stack of papers at security personnel, who prevented him from entering. Shortly after, a victim came forward who reported being assaulted by the same suspect while walking on the sidewalk near the synagogue.

The victim reported the suspect blocked the victim’s path and as the victim attempted to walk around the suspect, they were assaulted and the victim sustained facial injuries.

The suspect is described as male, with a dark complexion, between the ages of 25 and 35, standing at approximately 5-foot-8.

He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a beige jacket with a hood, a beige scarf and white running shoes.

Cannabis-firearms charges

Five men from the GTA have been charged by York Regional Police following the recovery of more than $2 million in stolen cannabis products and two illegal firearms.

On April 15, investigators were in the area of McLaughlin Road and Highway 401, in Mississauga, when they located a trailer that was reported stolen from the Niagara Region.

The trailer contained a large amount of cannabis products, intended to be delivered to numerous dispensaries, when it was stolen and investigators observed and identified several males as being associated with the trailer.

Investigators placed five males under arrest and while searching them, two firearms were located.

Their suspect photos are being released as investigators believe there are additional victims.

Manveer Singh, 21, of Brampton, Sarbjeet Singh, 32, of Brampton and Jaiskavan Malhi, 23, of Brampton all face seven theft, firearm, trafficking-related charges while Dilkhab Singh, 21, of Brampton and Karan Kumar, 25, of Hamilton face six charges.

Child sex abuse

York Regional Police have charged a Whitchurch-Stouffville man, 47 with child sexual abuse and more charges, and believe there may be more victims.

On April 1, the Peterborough Police began an investigation into a missing female youth from their area who was last seen getting into a grey sedan.

Soon after the vehicle was identified, YRP investigators were contacted to assist in locating the vehicle as it was believed to be in the Whitchurch-Stouffville area.

On April 2, the vehicle was located at a residence in Whitchurch-Stouffville and investigators who were concerned for the youth’s well-being entered the residence under exigent circumstances.

The youth was safely located and a man was charged and search warrants were executed at two residences following his arrest.

Christopher Conlon is charged with trafficking a person under 18 years, luring a child under 18 years, and make, distribute and possess child sexual abuse and exploitation Material (three separate charges).

Investigators are releasing his photo as they believe there are more victims.

Burlington robbery

Halton Regional Police have charged a 50-year-old Burlington man following a bank robbery in Burlington.

Cops say on Tuesday around 9:55 a.m., a male suspect entered the Royal Bank located at 2201 Brant Street and passed a note to a teller demanding cash.

The note indicated that the suspect was in possession of a firearm and he obtained a small amount of cash and exited the bank.

Police were contacted immediately, and officers quickly located and arrested the suspect outside the bank, all the stolen cash was recovered, and a black BB gun was located in the suspect’s possession.

No one was injured during the robbery or the arrest.

Stephen Laing has been charged with robbery with a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
